Covid-19 update – 5th May 2020
The Town Council is endeavouring to maintain services with available resources in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes our allotment sites.
Since March 2020 we have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of expressions of interest in becoming an allotment tenant.
Under normal circumstances, the Town Council undertakes allotment plot inspections three times a year and is then able to offer any returned plots to those on the waiting list. We would normally expect around 20-25 allotment plots to become available and be re-assigned to those who have been on the waiting list the longest.
As a result of the restrictions applied by Government to address the COVID-19 pandemic, we are aware that some of our allotment holders have been and remain unable to work on their plots as they usually would do. Under these circumstances, we believe it would be unfair to undertake plot inspections at this time.
For this reason, unless a plot holder voluntarily surrenders their plot, no new plots are likely to become available until at least the Autumn, when we may be able to resume inspections.
At present, the size of the waiting list means that any new enquirers would be likely to be waiting for over two years for a plot.
Applicants will remain on our waiting list and will receive an update from us either when a plot becomes available, or by the end of November 2020.
The Council is aware of the potential need for additional allotment land and assessing likely future need is one of the objectives within its Five Year Plan for 2019-2024.
