Visiting Leighton Buzzard and Linslade
Leighton-Linslade has been a merchant and tradesman’s town since trade records began in 1086 and street markets have always played an important role in the life of the community. Leighton Buzzard market is first mentioned in the Domesday Book and the Bailiff’s Accounts of 1341-42 give the yearly receipts from the Market as £10.7. Today the twice weekly market, held on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the High Street, maintains a tradition of selling quality goods at affordable prices. A Farmers Market, held on the third Saturday of each month offers an additional opportunity to source quality produce direct from local producers.
Leighton's High Street was established in the middle ages and its transition from rural community to bustling market town is reflected in the diverse buildings of character, many of which are Grade II listed. The town centre features major chain stores trading alongside independently owned shops offering excellent service as well as local knowledge.
A network of mews and alleyways lead off the High Street, some featuring buildings dating back to the 17th century, and now converted into interesting shops and cafes. In contrast, Waterborne Walk, one of the town’s most contemporary shopping areas, houses a number of national retailers. The town also has four supermarkets and a range of large retail outlets situated within walking distance of the High Street.
Attractive walks are easily accessible from a number of locations in the town, offering some 40 miles of varied countryside. There are numerous places of interest to visit within a few miles of Leighton Buzzard, and two internationally famous animal parks are located on the town’s doorstep. Heritage sites are also within easy reach by car, including Stockgrove Country Park, Ashridge Estate and Totternhoe Knolls.
